YouTube is
a video-sharing website founded in 2005. YouTube were bought by Google for 1,65
billion dollars, but today the website is worth much more. YouTube is the 3rd
most viewed website after Google and Facebook. Over 4 billion videos are watched
every day.
YouTube has
more than 1 billion unique viewers each month. Over 6 billion hours of video
are watched each month on YouTube (almost an hour for every person on
earth). 36 percent of those who use
YouTube are between the ages 18 to 34.
People
mostly use YouTube to share and watch. It’s common to share TV-clips, music
videos, video blogs (vlogs), educational videos and private videos. With more
than 200 million Americans online, political information is now regularly distributed
outside of traditional media. Candidates can use YouTube to engage Americans of
all ages. 21% of videos on YouTube are related to politics in some form. It’s a
common topic, as it allows for discussion and debate.
But with so
much free speech there is the potential to create controversy, as there are
some who will stand up to certain organizations or people in the form of
videos. This is seen to be a negative effect as it can lead to copyright
violations and censorship.
If you are
a creator of music, this is the way to reach the public. You can put your
videos out there for free, and if people like your songs, they can subscribe to
your channel and stay updated for when you should choose to publish your next
songs. Artists like Justin Bieber and Cody Simpson.
But with
over 100 hours of video uploaded every minute, how can YouTube control what’s
published? In fact, they can’t. Videos of beheading, murder, rape, racism and
general violence are all over YouTube. YouTube no longer have control, and
videos are not removed until someone reports it. But not only are there inappropriate videos
on YouTube, there are also some really harsh comments.
For some
people, YouTube made their lives really bad. When you were supposed to upload a
video and share it with your friends, it suddenly goes viral. People like Rebecca Black, known for the song
“Friday” was bullied at school because of her YouTube video, and had to take
the video down after it got over 160 million views because of all the negative
feedback.
But then
again, most people use YouTube for pure entertainment, and lots of people like
PewDiePie, Smosh, Jenna Marbles and Ray William Johnson actually made a career
out of being a YouTube entertainer and are earning a lot of money from it.
So, in my
opinion, there are more positive things than negative things about YouTube, but
again I believe it’s based on your ability to think critical. There are a lot
of manipulated videos on YouTube, and some people are not able to separate real
from fake. I believe that YouTube is good entertainment for everyone, no matter
age, country or religion.

Tverrfaglig prosjekt - Mediehistorie
I denne perioden skal vi jobbe med et selvvalgt tema i mediehistorien, uttrykkshistorien eller designhistorien. Vi skal lage en digital fortelling i premiere der vi formidler et informativt innhold på en underholdende måte (infotainment). Med dette skal vi bruke videoklipp og bilder som hjelper å illustrere innholdet. For å nå et større publikum skal vi bruke et internasjonalt språk - engelsk.
Oppgaven
Temaet skal være medie-, utrykk- eller designhistorie. Vi skal lage vår egen problemstilling. Filmen skal vare i ca. 3-6 minutt. Filmen skal ha en egen tittelside og rulletekst m/kilder.
Vi skal skrive manus og bruke vår egen stemme på filmens lydspor.
I tillegg til dette skal vi skrive en refleksjon på engelsk om arbeidsprosesssen og resultatet.
